Description |
Locus 3 is a soil deposit that fills the linear cut created by Locus 22. Locus 3 is a medium brown clay and soil mixture which fills the rectilinear space created by the cut within the plaster floor surface of Locus 2 which extends from the column base of Locus 5 for 2.14m. The locus is 0.50m wide at its northernmost extent but widens to 0.54m at its southernmost extent. The layer was excavated to a depth of 0.30m from the top surface of the plaster floor surface of Locus 2. Excavation stopped within Locus 3 when an extremely compact brown clay was found along the entirety of the locus that slope from south to north. Locus 3 contains inclusions of pottery, bone, vitrified material, and small rocks. The layer contained 34 fragments of vitrified terracotta. It is not immediately clear why this cut in the floor would be filled with vitrified terracotta; the fragments are not, however, likely associated with the burning event which destroyed the building. 368 sherds of pottery were found within Locus 3, ranging in material type and state of preservation. This included one cataloged artifact (PC20220068) a fine impasto trifurcated strap handle fragment. Further excavation is needed to clarify the function of the cuts (loci 21 and 22) within the floor. The cuts are potentially related to drainage necessitated by production but no materials or features found within the layer immediately suggested its function. While Locus 3 was a medium brown soil and clay mixture, the baulk walls revealed a significantly darker layer which appears to extend under the plaster floor surface of Locus 2. It is possible that Loci 7 and 13 are equal to the dark soil beneath the floor surface but further investigation is needed to determine their relationship. Eleven cataloged objects were found within Locus 3, including a terracotta waster (PC20220006). Five vitrified rooftiles were also cataloged (PC20220012; PC20220013; PC20220014; PC202220043; PC20220067) due to the unclear reason for vitrified rooftiles being included in the fill. A fragment of a pan tile with a finger impression was also found beneath the floor (PC20220026). A single fragment of a metal was found with Locus 3, a molded lead sheet fragment was recovered from the southern extent of the locus (PC20220076). Two soil samples were taken from Locus 3 for flotation (PC20220099; PC20220105). The samples will be further processed in the 2023 season. |
