Condition Two fragments conserved from four pieces (A) and two pieces (B) from a modern break. A and B join, but are not adhered, to preserve an interior view of the artifact, which represents two tiles so heavily vitrified that they have fused with a piece of chert in between them. Fragments are worn, pitted, and encrusted.
Description Two joining fragments of vitrified terracotta tile which have fused into one, but have been intentionally left in conservation as two artifacts to preserve a view of the biscuit. The fragments preserve a concave, unfinished face of a cover tile on one face; the opposite face is heavily vitrified, slightly convex, and otherwise unidentifiable. The fused fragment which represents the unfinished face of a cover tile preserves a finished edge. All other edges are ancient or modern breaks. In the biscuit the two fused tiles can be discerned by their different color profiles as well as delineated by a fragment of chert (stone) which must have been trapped beneath them when they fused. The chert is 0.01547m in length and 0.00590m in max. pres. height.
