Trench T108 2024
Year 2024
Description

Locus 10 is directly underneath Locus 5 and was opened due to an increase in the quantity and quality of finds, and of a notable soil change, from loam topsoil to a green claylike soil. Just as Locus 5, Locus 10 inhabits the entirety of the south western extension. This Locus is a 3 meter by 3 meter square just west of the the southernmost two meters of the western edge of the original trench. This extension also has an additional 1 meter by 1 meter square, directly south of the westernmost meter of the southern edge of the original trench. This locus brought an increase of roots, likely caused by the stump in the northeastern wall. It also contained a large amount of small 5 to 10 centimeter rocks that are very abundant in Locus 5. Locus 10 also saw an increase in the quantity of tile and pottery as well as its preservation, going from very abraded worn down materials to larger, more well preserved pieces. This was especially noticeable in the tile where many much more well preserved flange and pan tile fragments were found. No special finds were recovered in this locus.

Soil from Locus 10 was excavated using pickaxes, hand axes and removed with shovels into buckets, then into wheelbarrows where it was hand sorted. Once the stone formations and terracotta were slightly exposed, handpicks and trowels were used as a means of getting around and exposing the stones and fragments without damaging finds or features. Usually, pickpasses in this locus were thrown with one excavator starting in the north western corner and pulling back to the south in 1 meter stretches before having the soil sorted and wheelbarrowed. Locus 10 is topsoil mixed with the archaic stratigraphic layer as indicated by the clay loam, changes in inclusions and the findings and features. Our findings are contemporaneous with the archaic layers of past trenches. The dating is confirmed by the diagnostic pottery fragments as well as the features that became present as Locus 10 began uncovered a concentration of stones that seemed in line with that of Locus 8’s linear stone feature that may be part of the eastern wall of a building
