AM: We threw a pickpass beginning along the eastern edges of locus 5 (moving west and pickaxing across the locus’ surface. Due to light rains this morning, the soil is slightly softer and seems greyer in color. Less rock inclusions have been encountered in this pass, roots remain consistent. Pottery and tile finds remain consistent. We threw another pickpass starting along the E of locus 5 moving W for the first (E-W) meter, then moving S to N for the remaining 3 meters. Tile has increased here and is better preserved. A seemingly large stone has appeared 1.1m from the S edge and 20cm W of the E edge. Some 20cm stones have come loose just SW of the stone. Due to better preserved finds and a different soil texture and slight color change we have decided to prepare to open a new locus. In doing so, we used hand axes to balk wall and even out the elevation along the edges. This soil layer is more claylike in texture. Around the SW corner of locus 5 we excavated a handle fragment with what seems to be a thumbprint pressed into it.

PM:

We cleared the trench of loose soil and used the Munsell book to determine soil color. The color of Locus 10 is dark grayish brown 4/2 10YR.
