Trench T108 2024
Year 2024
Description

Locus 7 was opened as a means of delineating a pair of linear stone features running east to west for 2.8 meters with a width of 41 centimeters along the T108’s northern edge. In this locus, three stones that measure app. 40 centimeters in length are present along the trench’s northernmost edge, surrounded by medium sized stones along this line. This linear formation continues westward into T106 and eastward into T109. Aside from one stone that sticks out about 15 centimeters above the locus’ elevation, these stones are relatively flat. In the southwest half of the locus, a collection of smaller rocks, about 5 to 10 centimeters in size, is visible. In the southeast of this locus, a small area directly to the south of the larger stone in the northwest, is lacking in visible stones and terracotta. The soil in this space, along with the soil within the stones is compact and dry. This locus was not excavated during this season; Locus 7 was solely brushed and cleaned of loose soil and leaves, to allow the feature to be clearly visible in photography.

Locus 7 appears to be a part of a larger feature running across T108 and the neighboring trenches of T106 and T109. This linear rock feature appears to be the eastern portion of the northern wall of a structure that is oriented on an east-west axis. In T108, this preserved portion of this wall measures 2.8 meters. Locus 7 begins in the northwestern corner of the trench and extends eastward, until it intersects perpendicularly with a separate feature, Locus 8. Locus 8 is interpreted as a wall too, the eastern wall of the potential structure, also beginning in the northern edge of the trench, and extending north to south, angled slightly towards the west.

Locus 7 abuts Locus 8 and Locus 7 underlies Loci 2 and 4.
