Trench | T108 2024 |
Year | 2024 |
Description |
Locus 8 extends from the northern trench wall southward for 2.16 meters, underneath what had been excavated asLocus 11. Locus 8 was extended after its opening, once more of this linear rock feature was exposed during the excavation of two of T108’s extensions (loci 10 and 11). Locus 8 contains two parallel linear stone formations situated about 20 cm apart, that run north-south, angled slightly to the west. The westernmost linear formation was made up of stones about 10 centimeters in size, with the exception of one larger stone. The easternmost formation contains more flat stones of about 20 to 25 centimeters in size, with a slight concentration of smaller (5 centimeter stones) and terracotta fragments (5 to 10 centimeters in size) extending 20 centimeters east and slightly more than a meter south. In the northern portion of the locus, between the parallel stone lines, fragments of tile and ceramic are inlaid within the stones. The base fragment of a 15 cm long and 5 cm wide pithos was exposed in the center of Locus 8, about 40cm from the northern edge of the locus. Pithos body fragments are exposed just northwest of the pithos base fragment. Additional pithos fragments are scattered, some even layered upon each other in the southernmost one by one meter. The fragments of half of an upside down rim are visible directly to the east of the largest stone of the westernmost stone line, about one and a half meters from the southern edge. All of the ceramic fragments for this locus have remained in situ, as this locus was not excavated in this season. Tile fragments also were incorporated into this linear stone feature including large pan and cover tile fragments. The larger pieces were left in situ, while the smaller fragments were excavated as part of Loci 2, 4, and 10, as the features were being exposed. Due to the orientation of the features outlined by this locus, and its position to the east of the feature outlined by Locus 7, this locus is interpreted as the eastern wall of a structure. This feature extends to the south, into T107, where the linear stone formation continues until it reaches two very large stones, marking another turn and the beginning of the possible southern wall of the structure. The tile and pottery fragments inlaid within the stone formations of the wall may have been used as an internal packing. Locus 8 abuts and is contemporary with Locus 7. Locus 8 underlies Loci 2, 4, and 11 |
