Locus 1 was a deposit that extended across the entirety of the trench with a slight slope down from the North to the South. It consisted of a dark brown soil with several roots caused by a stump in the Locus and several small rocks varying between 5-15 cm in size.

Materials in this locus were heavily abraded and not particularly plentiful, with medieval pottery being found which marked the context as insecure given the antique tile and pottery fragments also found at this same level.

Locus 1 was excavated with pickaxes and shovels, with dirt being shoveled into buckets and hand-sorted over a wheelbarrow. As we reached closer to a different context we switched over to handpicks and continued hand sifting through buckets. Locus 1 was about 20cm deep and was excavated until a soil change which demarcated a need to change Loci. Based on the material excavated in Locus 1 as well as its stratigraphy, we determined it to be topsoil.
