Trench T108 2024
Year 2024
Description

Locus 9 is positioned in the east of T108, totaling all 4 meters of the eastern edge, and the 3 meters of the original trench in the southern edge. Locus 9 surrounds Locus 8 fully on two sides. In the northwestern corner of Locus 9 was a large stump, which stood between Loci 6, 9 and 10, which was removed by sawing the larger roots, then using hand axes to loosen the claylike soil around it, and finally an ax was used to remove the bare stump. Directly below the stump was a clay-like soil, which was removed with hand axes and trowels. When Locus 9 was completely removed, a continuation of the linear stone formation of Locus 8 was revealed. The linear stone feature of Locus 8 continued under Loci 10 and 11. Loci 9, 10 and 11 all were closed simultaneously and Locus 8 was extended to the south, to include the linear rock feature found under these three loci.

The soil in Locus 9, apart from the bioturbation surrounding the stump in the northwest corner, was compact and crumbly clay loam. This locus was not excavated apart from the northwest corner, where the stump had been removed. The eastern portion of the locus was bare apart from a few tile fragments, including a cover tile, a pan tile and some stones around 5 centimeters in size, scattered throughout the locus.

Locus 9 is bounded on the west by the linear rock formation of Locus 8 and extended to the eastern trench wall. As the linear stone formation of Locus 8 likely forms the eastern wall of a newly discovered building (East Terrace Archaic Phase Building 1, or ETAP1), Locus 9 is positioned on this new building’s exterior. The northwestern corner of this locus was above the extension of Locus 8, therefore part of the eastern wall of the structure.

Locus 9 abuts Locus 8 and likely is contemporary with Locus 6, the interior surface of this newly discovered building.
