July 23rd, 2024 SF 13 • Sf-t108-2024-0-13 • Fineware with slip • 216 ± 1.5E / 37 ± 2 S • Locus 0 • 28.02 ± .12m AE AM: We scraped and picked up loose dirt in Locus 10 to prepare it for photos after it rained yesterday. After photos were taken, a pickpass was thrown breaking ground from the SE corner of locus 10, moving NW across the whole locus. IN the SE 1m by 1m space fragments of cover and pan tile were excavated. Pottery and terracotta finds have increased slightly in this locus. In the SE 1m by 1m space fragments of cover and pan tile were excavated. Loose soil was cleaned. Both of the N balk walls and the NE balk wall (locus 0) were knocked down, separating locus 10 from loci 6,7,8,9. Since locus 10 will soon reach close to equal elevation to the rest of T108, the balk walls no longer needed to remain in place. PM: We returned to removing the rest of the N and NE balk walls, picking up loose soil with hands and dust pans. Finds from the balk walls (locus 0) consisted of about a bowl of terracotta and half a latte box of pottery. While hand picking along the E edge and the 1m by 1m in the SE, we exposed a 40cm stone along the northernmost E edge with some 20 cm stones exposed to the S of it. The soil is thin and crumbly and a brown gray color. Inclusions include medium to small size roots and rocks no more than 5 cm. We are defining the stump 1 ½ m from the S edge and 3m from the E. It stands in locus 10,9,8. Many small rocks were present NW below the stump. We are using a hand axe to level the soil against the S edge and balk wall the area. The rocks in the SE continue to be defined further. The W edge of locus 10 was evened out and balk wall straightened. Loose soil picked up.
