Year | 2024 |
Description |
Locus 2’s opening was marked by a change in soil type to an olive green clay soil and a change in the density and types of material being found. Unlike Locus 1, Locus 2 contained much better-preserved pieces of tile and pottery as well as less roots causing bioturbation. Locus 2 contains two stumps along the northern wall just as Locus 1 did and it slopes slightly down from North to South. The more secure context led to more notable small finds in the field such as a decorated base fragment and a ridged rim. The nature of the find's preservation and frequency leads us to believe this is a very secure deposit and context. The soil breaks into smaller less chunky clumps than Locus 1. We excavated using pickaxes then shoveling and sorting in buckets before using wheelbarrows to transport dirt. As we got further down we began to use hand pickaxes more instead to be more careful around this higher concertation of cultural material. Locus is situated right above parts of a linear stone feature and is contemporary with Locus 4 and Locus 10. As we got further down through locus 2 |
