Year | 2022 |
Description |
Locus 14 is a collapse layer in the northern 2.94 m of the trench that is 3 meters wide. The soil contains significant amounts of plaster which at times has degraded into the soil, giving it a pinkish brown color. The locus was covered by Locus 1 throughout its entire extent. It was excavated to a depth of 0.10 m, revealing a tile fall of well preserved roof tiles. The tile fall is positioned in the center of Locus 14, extending 2.40 m from east to west and 1.80 m from north to south. The tile packing begins 0.63 m from the northern edge of the OC2/Workshop floor (Locus 2). Within the tile packing, a number of tiles preserving full widths were found. A full width pan tile was found extending under Locus 20, sloping significantly from west to east. The pan tile measured 0.80 m in length and 0.56 m in width. The tile was left in situ. The coordinates and elevation of the pantile are as follows: NW:176.45E/64.50S, 26.63m AE SW: 175.93E/65.18S, 26.71m AE SE: 176.37E/65.47S, 26.49m AE NW: 176.80E/64.85, 26.50m AE To the north of the pan tile, a full width covertile measuring 0.40 m in length and 0.16 m in width was found and was left in situ. An additional full width covertile measures 0.33 m in length and 0.18 m wide. A full width covertile that was found at the highest elevation of the tile packing was removed to further reveal the tile packing beneath its multiple fragments. The cover tile was revealed to preserve an “X” siglum (PC20220111). The tile packing preserves courses of tiles, including at least 4 courses of pan tiles within the collapse, and 3 courses of cover tiles. The tile packing was revealed throughout the extent of Locus 14 before excavation paused. Further excavation is needed to determine the extent and depth of the tile fall. The relationship to the tile fall that is less well preserved to its southwest, Locus 8, needs further explorations to determine how the two tile falls are related across their change in elevation. Within the soil of Locus 14, 13894 fragments of plaster were found. Because of plaster found adhered to both pan and cover tiles of this locus, it seems clear that the plaster was applied to the roofing system, perhaps to help hold elements in their right place (see, e.g., Special Find 132, pg. 225). Cataloged finds from Locus 14 include a tubular shell bead (PC20220030) found within the roof collapse in the northern extent of Locus 14. Two additional tubular shell beads were also found in T100, directly to the north of T26 (PC20220001 and PC20220002). 197 sherds of pottery were found within Locus 14, including a fine impasto lion paw vessel foot fragment (PC20220074). A singular bronze nail was also recovered from the locus (PC20220041). |
