Description |
Locus 5 is a triangular worked limestone measuring 0.45m by 0.20m by 0.30m that is positioned 0.87m from the eastern baulk wall. It is abutted by Loci 2, 3, and 4. The stone is 0.24m in thickness on its northern face. The surface of the stone is cracked and preserves grooves that may indicate tool use. Locus 5 is in line with Locus 11 and Locus 18, spaced ca. 1.20m apart from each stone. There are three lines of such stones. Each stone is abbutted by the plaster floor surface (Loci 2,3). ` Locus 5 functioned as a column pad in the OC2/Workshop structure. A wooden column likely rested on the stone and functioned to support the roof of the structure. Locus 6, a smaller limestone to the north of Locus 5, may have served as a column base that provided additional support to the roof in the vicinity of Locus 5. The cut (Locus 22) in the plaster floor surface (Loci 2, 3) was excavated up to the southern face of Locus 5 but appears to extend to the north of Locus 5. Further excavation is needed to clarify the function of the cuts with the floor. The cuts are potentially related to drainage necessitated by production but it is not immediately clear why a potential drainage feature would extend past the column bases. |
