Trench T26_2022
Year 2022
Description

Locus 7 is a layer of heavily carbon-included dark brown soil in a trapezoidal shape measuring 0.50m by 0.60m by 0.60m by 0.65m in the southeastern area of the excavated part of the trench before it was extended. This locus sloped from the south to the north. The soil is a clay and soil mix loose compaction. The layer lies directly below the floor surface of Locus 4 which was removed in the 2019 season.

The layer contains frequent inclusions of carbon, ceramics, and a small amount of vitrified terra cotta fragments. A high volume of bone, 132 fragments of bone, or 41% of all bone found within T26 in 2022 were recovered from this small area. Frequent inclusions of small fragments of red and brown chert added to the dark color of the layer. A fragment of an iron nail (PC20220079) was also recovered from Locus 7.

The color, compaction, and composition of Locus 7 is similar to that of Locus 13. Locus 13 was a similar carbon-included layer located to the north of the OC2/Workshop floor (Locus 2). Locus 7 was excavated to a depth of 0.07m in the south bringing it level to the area of excavation in 2019 before excavation ceased. The layer continues and was left with visible ceramics and a bone on the surface.

Locus 7 was previously thought to be a burn layer equal to burn layers associated with the phase directly preceding the construction of the workshop. After excavation, it is clear that the layer functioned as a leveling course for the preparation of the construction of the OC2/Workshop floor.
