Trench Tesoro 90
Date Opened 2019-07-16
Date Closed 2019-07-22
Description

Locus 25 was located in the western end of the trench, in the central meters. It measured
approximately 2.5x3 meters in dimension.
Locus 25 was situated just to the north of the southern wall of a hut that was built over the porch
of EPOC4, following EPOC4’s abandonment and destruction; the southern wall of the hut was
left in situ, while the other three walls were removed, to demonstrate the presence of the hut.
Locus 25 is the beaten earth floor of this later hut that was built over the ruins of EPOC4; this
interpretation is based on prior excavations of the area.
Locus 25 was excavated using hand picks and trowels. Soil was hand-sorted in the trench, then
passed through a 1cm gauge sieve. The first wheelbarrow and last wheelbarrow of soil were
collected as flotation samples; the last wheelbarrow of soil was collected as a sample as this soil
directly overlaid EPOC4’s beaten-earth floor.
Locus 25 is a soil deposit. It is olive-brown in color, with white limestone inclusions. It is a
compacted deposit, and soil is claylike. There was a scattering of small rocks (maximum
dimension of 15cm) present throughout the locus.
Locus 25 contained moderately high quantities of material culture. Most materials included tile,
plaster, pottery, and bone. Additionally, small quantities of slag, bronze flakes, and antler were
found in Locus 25.
Locus 25 directly overlaid a floor surface of EPOC4, which was not excavated and so does not
have an associated locus. Many ceramic sherds and bone and antler fragments recovered from
the bottom of Locus 25 were lying flat atop the underlying surface, further indicating that the
underlying surface was a floor surface.
Locus 25 is equivalent to Loci 4 and 5 from the 2017 excavations of T90 and to Locus 17 of the
2018 excavations of T90.
