Description | Locus 69 is the soil below the lifted paver of Locus 72, the floor of the colonnaded corridor. The soil is a fine loose silt/sand (Munsell 5 YR 5/4 reddish brown). Hopefully some of the finds from this locus will help pinpoint the date of construction of this floor. This soil may be natural wadi soil, which could either have been brought in to level out the area in preparation for the floor and the Bath Complex more broadly or more likely is the natural soil already in the area on which the Complex was constructed. The material finds, though, make it clear that this is not untouched natural soil, but was clearly involved in the construction of the Bath Complex. There are inclusions of pottery, bone, and small stones. A number of air pockets were initially confusing during excavation, but they are probably just a result of the massive disruption to this entire area with the earthquakes, as well as the simple passing of time, which led to a settling of soil and the creation of air pockets below the floor. Phased with the construction of the floor (as we cannot be sure of its natural versus manmade status), Locus 69 is phased to Stage 2, the main construction of the Bath Complex. |
