Description | Trench D4 is a 5 by 10 meter excavation unit located on the steep eastern slopes of Kenan Tepe’s main mound. This trench was excavated during the 2001, 2002 and 2007 field seasons. This was an extremely important trench for several reasons. First, it was in this trench that UTARP team members first encountered the Middle Bronze Age street and neighboring architecture that was later uncovered in several adjacent trenches. Because this street was paved almost entirely with discarded pottery, Trench D4 produced unparalleled amounts of Middle Bronze Age ceramics belonging to the so-called “Red Brown Wash Ware” corpus. This being the case, much of our early analysis of this corpus relied on the many excellent contexts that emerged from this trench. Perhaps even more important however, the Middle Bronze Age street sealed and Ubaid period domestic structure that became the primary focus of our analysis of the Ubaid domestic economy. Trench D4 contains the large central room and portions of several smaller adjacent rooms belonging to an Ubaid “Tripartite” house. |
