General remarks | This locus is a cobble surface located in the southeastern quarter of the trench. Above this surface we had the big rocks with L4070 from last year and now we are able to see that a surface is coming up. More or less we can say that it is like a room but it has got a drain in it that is located near to the west baulk.. This surface is a western extension of surface L4065. It should be noted that the connection between 4065 and 4083 in evident under stones that were part of 4081. Other parts of both loci abut wall 4081. Bradley thinks this is a doorway that was at some point blocked by some of the stones that were part of 4081. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
