Area D Trench 4

July 10, 2002

The day started by taking the closing elevations of L4062 (the wall that has been found at the bottom of the baulk in between D4 and D3; it is the west baulk of the sounding D3). Today I started to excavate from L4064. After taking the rock wall out (L4062), we were able to face a new surface that became equal in level with L4064, so I decided to make them one locus, but I am not quiet sure about it yet. During my digging process in L4064, the idea of dividing the trench into two became much more clear. I have divided the locus into two different locias, because I was able to see that a surface was coming up. This means that the north west side of the locus will get a different locus number .The north east side of this locus has a different context then the north west side of the locus. The north east side has many small rocks on it being placed, and the north west side is a smooth area as contrast to the north east side. Also the soil of the north west side is very soft. On the other hand I have to say that two slags have been found in the north west side of the locus (4064).

So, as I have mentioned it before, I have divided L4064 into two parts. In order to see the difference more clear. So, we have traced both parts. In order to be at the same level have traced 4cm from the west side and 2cm from the east side. After we were done with the tracing we were able to see that the east part of L4064 has also some potsherds on. After articulating this locus I will give new locia numbers to both sides. I think that a new surface will show up. The elevations will be taken for the new locia openings.

Also I stared to excavate L4066 (that is the south west part of the trench and it abuts the gaint rocks from last year, their locus number was 4037). The soil of this part used to be harder then the rest of the other locias in the trench. After taking it 3cm down (in the north south direction) we were able to see that new rocks were coming. So, I wonder if the surface touches the rocks or not (surface L4065, rocks L4066). As far as I could have articulated it today (L4066, and the last years part with the locus number 4037, I will give a new locus number to these big rocks), I was able to see that the surface (4065) abuts the big rocks, and it also abuts the rocks in L4066.

Our aim for tomorrow is to finish the articulation of the rocks, and then I am planning to take out L4068, and to excavate L4067.

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
