Description | Locus 19 is comprised of the contextualized interior soil and exterior western coursing of the circular stone feature. The soil between the top of the circular feature and a depth of about 3m is medium brown, moist, and claylike, especially between the coursing of stones. This medium brown soil has a high quantity of carbon inclusions as well as a small number of roots. A small concentration of pottery and bone is present and the majority of it recovered from between the stones which are removed. An abnormally high amount of architectural terra cotta fragments are present, including decorative architectural terra cottas (20150033, 20150037, 20150041, 20150045, 20150051, 20150052, 20150053, 20150054, 20150056, 20150060, 20150061, 20150062, 20150063, and 20150064). 2-2.5m below the top of the circular feature stones 20-80cm in length appear within the locus, predominately replacing the tile packing. Below these stones, at a depth of 2.5-3m, a smaller packing of terra cotta, especially non-decorative architectural tile is present. Below this packing, is a large, worked stone fragment positioned in a sharply diagonal angle sloping from south to north and leaning against the southern edge of coursing of the circular feature. This large worked stone fills the majority of the final meter of Locus 19. The soil surrounding this fragment is far more yellow and less claylike. It is included with small concentrations of small and worn fragments of terra cotta, pottery, and bone. Directly below it are a few worn fragments of impasto pottery and a spindle whorl (20150065) before the soil turns to mottled grey and light brown deteriorating rock and became sterile. |
