Daily opening photos of the Baulk Trim and Locus 19 were taken. Opening elevations were also taken and are as follows ( Locus 19 ):

NW Corner: 24.56m A.E.

NE Corner: 24.66m A.E.

SE Corner: 24.67m A.E.

SW Corner: 24.54m A.E.

Work begins in Locus 19 , focusing on bringing the level of soil in the east of the interior of the circular feature down to the level of the exposed stones of the western face. Leaf trowels are primarily being used for precision around the packing of terra cotta tile. A 15cm stone was removed form the southern central region if the interior if the circular feature. A fragment of possible sima cavetto has been exposed near where the previous stone was removed. It was not yet able to be removed. A fragment of the banquet scene frieze

plaque however was removed.

It was decided that an additional two buckets worth of soil should be kept for floatation. One bowl of tile has already been filled. The tile being found is in poor condition, much with black or gray interior fabric. Inclusions of carbon as well as decaying rock is also present in the soil. Few sherds of pottery have been uncovered. And even fewer bone fragments.  A possible statute fragment has been uncovered (Find 3). Work will now focus on removing the loose soil and defining any exposed stones or tile for photographs and drawings.

Locus 19

Roots were clipped and a drawing was done of the profile of the circular feature, having now completed the second 50cm cut down along the western side. Photographs were also taken, both of the western face and the aperture from above.  Work commenced as it did previously, using leaf trowels to remove soil from between the tile packing in order to complete the next (and third) 50cm cut. The soil remains consistent–densely packed, claylike, moist, and medium brown. A statue fragment and fragment of incised bucchero recovered.

Locus 19

Many other fragments of cover and pan tile recovered, including several which are thoroughly burned and black all the was through. A 15cm rock removed from the extreme western edge of the circular feature. Soil continues to be removed using trowels and leaf trowels. Soil remains consistent with Locus 19 –a medium brown, claylike, moist soil. The frequency of recovery of tile has diminished noticeably. Three fragments of decorative architectural terra cotta recovered in a cluster.
