Work began in Locus 19 with hand trowels. The loose soil that had been placed over the in situ sima fragment yesterday is being removed in order to take the daily photo. Daily photo of Locus 19 and Baulk Trim taken. Daily opening elevations taken of Locus 19 .

Daily Elevations:

NW Corner: 24.79m A.E.

NE Corner: 24.84m A.E.

SE Corner: 24.90m A.E.

SW Corner: 24.84m A.E.

Soil removed from between stones in order to remove stones. A stone, approximately 50cm in length, removed from the northwest face of the circular feature. A small stone, ~5cm in length removed from the north face of the circular feature. Soil remains medium brown

and moist and claylike. Small hand picks used to remove soil from between stones. A stone approximately 20cm in length removed from northwest face of circular feature. Trowels continue to be used within the circular feature to define terra cotta fragments. As excavation continues around in situ lateral sima a large fragment of frieze plaque exposed just south and abutting the lateral sima. Large amounts of architectural terra cotta fragments recovered as well as small amounts of pottery and bone. Possible lateral sima attachment fragment recovered.

Began by removing the last stone from the western profile of the circular feature to achieve the proper elevation for the second 50cm cut (though the elevation of the internal soil pack also will still need to be dropped further). Seventeen stones removed across the western profile from 10-50cm in length. The first tarp used to collect stones removed from the circular featureÂ’s profile is entirely full, a second tarp was laid down to the northeast (and next to the tile dump). The seventeen rocks removed all placed on the newly laid tarp, beginning at the northwest corner and moving east in tows moving southwards.  While removing stones, a fragment of sima cavetto, possibly preserving paint, recovered from the interior.

In order to better see the vertical profile of the northern extent of the wellÂ’s diameter some soil cleared away which falls on the exterior of the circular feature but because the soil is packed around the exterior stones material excavated will be collected with Locus 19 materials.

Locus 19

As the northern diameter profile has been fully revealed, work concentrates on dropping the elevation of the interior to that of the second 50cm cut. While excavating, a poorly preserved fragment of sima, which may have paint, recovered.

Locus 19

While the elevation of the interior soil has not yet dropped to the designed elevation of the second 50cm cut, work halted due to time constraints. Soil which had fallen into the main trench ( Locus 18 ) shoveled out into buckets and sorted in the wheelbarrow. During shoveling a fragment of slipped fineware recovered.

Locus 19

After buckets sorted, work ended for the day.

Daily Totals:

Locus 19:

Terra Cotta: 3¾ bowls

Pottery: 2/3 latte (67 fragments)

Bone: 10 fragments
