Description | This locus is assigned to post holes carved into the limestone pavers of the East Walkway. These are only extant in areas of the East Walkway, which extend southward from 0.64 m north of the north end of the South Doorway. Seven of these holes are clearly cut into the limestone pavers. The post holes are usually 0.20 m-by-0.10 m in size. Their depth remains undetermined. The orientation of the post holes within their respective blocks differs from block to block, some are placed in the center of blocks while others are carved utilizing the border with another paver as one edge of the post-hole. At least one paver containing a post-hole is drastically different in shape and size, further suggesting the creation of the post holes was not coeval with the construction of the floor. The rough quality of these cuttings, however, indicates that the holes were carved while the pavers were already in situ. In intact portions of the floor, the placement of the post holes corresponds on an east-west axis with those in Locus 56. One row of post holes are incised roughly 1.62 m east of the East Corridor Wall. Another row of post holes are carved approximately 1.10 m east of those. As the walkway is only fully preserved in the southern section (from 0.64 m north of the north side of the South Doorway to the south end of the walkway), we cannot know if these holes also existed in the north and central sections of the East Walkway. |
