Descriptive Attribute Value(s)
Architectural or Soil Locus? Soil
Underlies Nothing.
Combined with Locus 19.
Description This is a Brown (Munsell 7.5 YR 5/4), loose, sandy overburden layer, which includes area within and immediately adjacent to doorway. The soil quality of Locus 21 is similar to that of Locus 18 and also includes some large limestone ashlars, dislodged during collapse. The soil in Locus 21 contains a comparatively high concentration of wall plaster, as well as a high concentration of stone and plaster architectural fragments. Many of these were cornice fragments. One limestone corner cornice of the doorway (Seq. No. 73119), in good condition, had collapsed in the exact center of the doorway (1.15 m from the southernmost side of the doorway). Much of the contents of the doorway, including a damaged column drum with a Mason’s Mark (with diameter of approximately 1.20 m), were removed with the bulldozer.
