Architectural or Soil Locus? Soil
Definition A North-South strip of fine, sandy soil
Stage Stage 2
Description An approximately 0.32–0.37 m wide strip of sandy fill, its depth is unknown—although no indications of it were found inside Vault Locus 12. The locus is visible for 7.90 m, between the 12th and 19th arch springers—but is presumed to extend the length of Wall Locus 6. The Munsell Color ranges between 7.5 YR 7/6 (Reddish Yellow) and 5/6 (Strong Brown). As the locus was unexcavated there are no inclusions to record. It is thought that the locus is a construction feature, since similar strips of fill have been found along the north and east sides of the Lower Temenos. A suggestion offered by D. Qublan was that it could serve as a form of “cushioning” to absorb the vibrations of seismic activity.
Underlies Loci 1, 4.
