Definition Vault constructed through the Middle Pier Wall (Locus 11) between the West Cryptoporticus East and West Cryptoporticus West
Description This vault is constructed into the east face of the lower four ashlar courses of the Middle Pier Wall (Locus 11), between the 12th and 13th arch springers. It appears to extend west beneath the Middle Pier Wall (Locus 11) into the West Cryptoporticus West (a fact confirmed during the subsequent excavation of Trench 98). The hewn sandstone ashlars, which make up the visible portion of the arched entrance of the vault, range from 0.35-to-0.45 m in height, and were laid using a mortar and snecking stones; the exact number of stones used in constructing the entrance can not be determined without further excavation beneath the abutting floor pavers of Locus 25. As with Vault Locus 12, the construction method of this vault suggests it was built contemporary with Wall Locus 11 in the main construction period. At present the vault is blocked with several courses of ashlars and hewn stones, which remains unexcavated. This blockage is clearly later than the original construction of the vault, a fact reflected in the careful shaping of the inserted blocks to fit the curvature of the vault. A notable difference between this vault and that of Locus 12 is that here the entire opening of the vault was blocked by the insertion.
