Description | Constructed of sandstone ashlars laid in a header and structure arrangement with wet-mortar, this locus represents all that remains of the upper courses of Wall Locus 28. There are four-to-five courses extant, and each course was laid with two-to-three rows in depth, situated between the 22nd and 25th arch springers. The survival of this construction in Locus 18 suggests that the original height of Wall Locus 28 corresponded to the same level as the West Lower Temenos Retaining Wall (Locus 6). A comparison of the dimensions and workmanship of the stones found in situ in Locus 18 with a selection of the wall ashlars extracted from the collapse fill in Loci 1,4, 2, 9, and 10, suggests that this superstructure originally extended the entire length of the West Cryptoporticus East. It is significant to note, however, that the Locus 18 ashlar construction appears to be built to abut rather than bond to Wall Locus 6. This may be the result of the strip of sandy fill (Locus 7) between Wall Loci 6 and 28, which appears to extend beneath Locus 18 and thus prevented the ashlars in both walls being bonded together. The fact that it is bonded with Wall Locus 28 indicates that it was probably constructed at the same time as the other features in the main building period. |
