Description This is a sedimentation deposit that accumulated between the top surface of Wall Locus 28 and the current level of the Lower Temenos. It extends the length of Trench 97, from the north balk of Trench 79 of the 2001 excavation until the north balk of the 2004 excavation where the West Cryptoporticus East intersects the Propylaeum. The compacted soil consisted of fine silt and sand, with the Munsell range between 7.5YR 6/4 (Light Brown) and 7.5YR 5/6 (Strong Brown). The deposit included a selection of small artifact types, including two superb glass fragments with intact rim sections. Many architectural elements were also recovered, including a significant number of limestone fragments from Elephant-headed capitals. Note: Assignment of this locus to Stage 6 is primarily in reference to the collapsed architectural elements; deposition of the fill is more appropriately assigned to Stages 6–8.
Stage Stage 6
Definition Fill deposit from surface to the extant top course of the east wall of the West Cryptoporticus East (Locus 28), including the overburden. [Originally defined as two loci, but combined on 7 June 2004 when it was realized the deposit overlay a single wall.]
