Description

A very compact light brown soil and clay mix in the northeast corner of the trench prior to its extension. East of burn layer Locus 7, north of burn layer Locus 8, north of worked stone Locus 4, east of worked stone Locus 3, north of surface Locus 11. Amorphous in shape with longest side running east west and measuring 1.5m. There were very frequent plaster and tile inclusions, along with some vitrified terracotta, bone, and pottery. Locus 9 was a very compact layer that lay in a depression between sloping burn layers Locus 7 and 8 and sloping surface Locus 11. The soil was mixed with clay and many building material inclusions. This depression continued in the eastern extension of the trench where it is also boarded by burn layer Locus 18. Locus 9 is a compacted soil and clay fill just north of the northern end of the workshop floor which has inclusions of workshop building material. The fact that it lies in a depression suggests that it may have filled a feature that originally functioned as some sort of channel or had a drainage role in water management. It was likely filled during and after the destruction of the workshop building.
