[71] 22 July 2019 AM The morning began with work in Locus 9 to investigate the relationship between the heavily carbon included layer and the hard packed clay of Locus 9. Handpicks and trowels were used to lower the level of the soil and to improve the baulk walls. The northern face of Locus 4 that has been exposed by Locus 9 was defined. The bottom of the stone column pad was revealed to be at a depth of 24cm from the surface. While hand picking and leveling in Locus 9 between Locus 3 and Locus 4 a tooth was recovered (Special Find #35).

Handpicking in the northeast of Locus 9 has revealed small to medium sized rocks in addition to small fragments of terracotta and tile. Troweling in the northwest of the trench has revealed patches of darker soil that is less compacted than the remainder of Locus 9. While troweling diagnostic bones were recovered (Special Find #36 and Special Find #37).

It was decided to extend T-26 to the north in order to investigate the extent of the depression indicated by the sloping plaster in Locus 11. Because this plaster is sloping downward toward the north, the extension will aim to clarify the relationship between the depression and the workshop. The extension will be opened as Locus 12. It is an extension 2 meters to the north, 1.5 meters East-West.

[77] PM Opening drawings were made for Locus 12, and opening elevations were taken. A pickpass was thrown in the eastern half of Locus 12 and was sorted by hand. Among materials found were tile, plaster, small amounts of bone, and many rocks and small roots. The soil of Locus 12 is very compacted and dried-out coil and clay mix on the surface with tarp marks and horizontal root across the surface.
A pickpass was thrown along the eastern 50cm of Locus 12 and soil was sorted by hand into buckets. While sorting a fragment of diagnostic fine impasto was recovered in addition to associated fragments of plaster with reed impressions (Special Finds #38 and #39).

While sorting in Locus 9 + 12 two diagnostic bones were found (Special Find #40 and Special Find #41).

Handpicks and trowels were used to lower the level of the soil in the northeast corner of Locus 9, revealing small to medium sized rocks and roof tile fragments. Some tile fragments are possibly painted with a purple or red slip, but the level of preservation is poor. A collection of passible examples were recorded as Special Object #42 to be taken to the magazzino for cleaning. Two representative fragments drawn below.

As sorting continued in Locus 12, a diagnostic bone was found (Special Find #43).

In the western part of Locus 9, near Locus 3, several fragments of bone were found (Special Find #44).
