General remarks | This is a collection unit covering the midlle and the north of the trench. After the first day of excavation, L.5209 expanded further north and this locus shrunk a little bit. However, L.5209 shrunk dramatically in the following two working days and this locus took over the entire area. On the whole, the area consisted of a few mud-bricks and silty mud fill. Instead of possibility of having this locus as a thrash area, it may well be an open activity area where the artifacts, such as pottery, stone tools or bone tools, not really used intensly but the activities were, perhaps, more related with the use or production of mud. What could that activity be is CANNOT be known from the quality of preservation in this locus. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
