Today L.5209 has been removed completely and around the Wall L.5212 was excavated in order to see its sides. This work showed that it goes further down. I dropped L.5207 and L.5217, and gave a new locus number L.5220 to the area covering almost the entire trench. I did this because I would like to excavate this not much fruitful trench faster Bradley already suggested this earlier. In the same time, I would like to have control of this way of digging of the trench from the sections of the small sounding in the SW corner of the trench. Accordingly, I am hoping that I can come to thick ashy layer that is visible in the W section of the sounding. This layer seems promising and there may be reliable contexts horizontally spreading into the trench, if it is not a little preserved activity area that I have been excavating lately. Thus, work in new locus L.5220 continued w/ big pick.
The skull began appearing in L.5217 turns out to be an infant burial (L.5221) that was represented with almost complete bones of the human skeleton. Burial may be less than a year old since there were no teeth found with this burial. The body was placed into a small pit that was not visible when the burial was first discovered. The weak line of the edge was visible only in the S side (hopefully photos can show this edge). The body was placed in a sitting position, and probably, the arms were crossed in the chest area. The two large pieces of sherds seems to have been placed in upright position and the body was leaning back to them.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
