Work at the N portion of trench proved that the wall L.5212 continues further below the current excavation surface. It comes out of the W section and continues only about 1.30 m before it disappears. It consists of one row of bricks (70x20x30cm) but it is not clear how many rows it has. Unfortunately, it’s top 30 cm was destroyed by an un-experienced worker.
NE of the L. 5207 represents the edge of the Ubaid settlement and the further N of it is deposit filled by the fallen or dumped material from the later period occupations at the site. The locus number for this area is L.5215.
L.5206 yielded a plaster surface area today, which is located to the E of this locus. It received L.5216. It is made of very fine silt and a very thin line of white plaster applied on top of it. The entire area of this feature covers about 1m2 area and the plaster was preserved only in the W edge of it. Even though it slightly slopes towards E, it may still be considered as horizontal. There is no other plaster area in L. 5206 that may be correlated with this plaster surface. The Ground Stone (KT# 15) found near it may confirm that this surface was a much larger surface, but not horizontal position of the ground stone disproves this possibility. Lack of further material evidence prevents to elaborate about the size and use of this surface. Thus, I believe it was used for a very short time for some activity, say about three days and then left open until sealed with later deposit, or it is part of a larger surface that served for some unknown activities for much longer time but only this portion is preserved. Because of this plaster and the ground stone, I dropped L.5206, and gave a new locus number to the S of the trench (L.5217). Seeing a few horizontal sherds and specks of charcoal, perhaps the indication of the change of texture in the soil and confirms that giving new locus was not a bad idea but safer to have better control.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
