General remarks On separation of locus 5174 into northern and central sections of the trench this locus was given to the northern section. As 5174 was excavated a rounded and compacted mudbrick feature was identified during trowelling (5200) and a wall line running from the western side of the northern baulk to the northern section of the eastern baulk. By the conclusion of the season the ashy layer identified in bauk section and in plan occupied the north eastern portion of this locus in a triangular area about 0.7 x 0.5 x 0.5 m.

Has note Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci.
