This is Nick’s trench that was excavated last year until July 20, 2005.
New loci have been given for this year and they are listed below at the end of this page.
Work started with 4 workers in the South portion of the trench (L.5206). The entire area has been excavated with small pick to remove some dirt and keep the locus horizontally even. This allowed seeing the actual ancient deposits and removing the impressions made from leaking rain and the plastic sheets that. This job showed that Nick’s last locus for this area (L.5190) is continuing. It will be clearer when the surface of this area will be dried tomorrow.
Locus 5209, Nick’s L. 5205, within the L. 5207 is continues further down also. It hard to identify what it is as of now. It is very hard dense clay with dirty brown color silt that contrasts with the lighter color of the surrounding L.5207. It consists of chunks of 3-5 cm and much larger chunks of chert flakes. The ones visible on the surface will hopefully remain until I excavate this locus and put them into their bags.
Locus 5208, Nick’s L.5191, which is the large circular pit to the E of the trench, had unexcavated N half left from last year. This unexcavated part produced a short section probably resulting from an attempt to visualize the deposition history of this pit. I removed this today with a worker and made the pit horizontal.
I also cleaned the W section of the trench for about 1.5 meter from the very bottom that shows the upper ‘Ubaid levels where the Ubaid building was unearthed.
List of New Staring Loci of the trench:
L.5206 S of the trench (general collection area)
L.5207 N of the trench (general collection area)
L.5208 E.B. pit to the E of the trench (Nick’s 5191).
L.5209 General collection unit within the L.5207
Hard clayey silt w/ various sizes of gravel and chert flakes
L.5210 Pit N of L.5209.
L.5211 Wall running almost parallel to the N section (Nick’s L.5201)
L.5212 Wall coming out from the NW corner of the trench and running NW to SE
(Nick’s L.5183)
L.5214 1x1 m sounding in the SW corner of the trench (last year, stopped at
585.31 meter)

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
