Description Locus 8 represents a mottled olive brown soil, with light gray and black inclusions. The texture of the soil is claylike, with high numbers of terracotta and pottery having been recovered. Notable ceramic finds include: braded pottery fragment, ridged bucchero, and slipped pottery. Also recovered were possible siglum fragment, as well as a possible gorgon fragment. The slipped pottery was eventually rendered as bulk finds due to the quantity; however, after consultation with the conservator it was found that the apparent slip actually reflects a highly glossy soil encrustation on the surface of fine ceramic fabrics and therefore ceased to be specially found or found in bulk. Locus 8 underlays Locus 6, spanning the entire trench save for the northwestern corner that is Locus 7.
