AM

A pick pass through the western half of the trench begins the workday. A second pick pass is conducted in the eastern half. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets to then be dumped into a wheelbarrow. Soil is a claylike mottled brown with gray, black, and white inclusions and stones from pebble to palm-size. While sorting the soil from the eastern half of the trench, a sherd of braided pottery (Special find #1) was revealed.

Special find #1:

- Locus 8

- 55.68 E/ 72.52 S

- 23.40 mAE

- Braided pottery

-

A third pick pass was made in the western half of the trench. Large quantities of both terra cotta and pottery have been recovered in Locus 8

so far. In addition to this, a small number of bone fragments have been found. While hand sorting the soil from this pick pass, a fragment of ridged bucchero (Special find #2) was uncovered.

Special find #2:

- Locus 8

- 73.54 S/ 54.65 E

- 23.47 mAE

- Ridged bucchero

-

While sorting another pick pass in the eastern half of the trench, a possible siglum fragment was found (Special find #3).

Special find #3:

- Locus 8

- 72.38 S/ 56.04 E

- 23.44 mAE

- Possible siglum fragment

-

The soil has been consistently the claylike medium mottled brown with white, gray, and black

inclusions. Stones range in size from half-palm to palm-sized and are in higher quantities in Locus 8 than in Locus 6 . Terra cotta averages the size of half a palm and is found in higher quantities than in any previous loci. In addition to this, there is also a large quantity of pottery being recovered.

Locus 7 will not be worked in today as we focus on Locus 8 .

A pick pass was made in the western half of the trench. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow. While sorting, a fragment of vitrified terra cotta (Special find #4) was found. Shortly thereafter, a sherd of slipped pottery (Special find #5) was then revealed.

Special find #4:

- Locus 8

- 23.43 mAE

- 72.56 S/55.58 E

- Vitrified terra cotta

-

Special find #5:

- Locus 8

- 23.40 mAE

- 72.31 S/55.57 E

- Slipped pottery

-

These finds appear to be in or very adjacent to Locus 5 and Locus 4 above it.

In interest of time, work now focused on taking down soil near the baulk walls and the stump in the southeastern part of the trench. Soil will be hand-sorted into buckets and dumped into the wheelbarrow.

A pick pass was conducted in the western half of the trench. Soil continues to be sorted by hand, then dumped via wheelbarrow into the southwest dirt dump. In terms of color and content, color remains a dark mottled olive brown, and inclusions continue to mainly be pottery and terra cotta, with some stone and little bone. While sorting, a sherd of ridged pottery was recovered (Special find #6).

Special find #6:

- Locus 8

- 23.40 mAE

- 72.91 S/54.95 E

- Ridged pottery

-

A pick pass was conducted in the eastern meter of the trench.

A pick pass was conducted in the central extent of the trench. Soil is beginning to display signs of change in color and fabric, with shades of white becoming more prevalent. While sorting, a sherd of slipped pottery (Special find #7) was found.

Special find #7:

- Locus 8

- 23.42 mAE

- 73.61 S/56.52 E

- Slipped pottery
