Daily log, July 14

AM

The rain yesterday afternoon and evening has made the soil in the trench damp but workable. Therefore, work begins with a pick pass in the westernmost meters of the trench to complete the trench-wide pick pass begun yesterday. Soil is hand-sorted into buckets and then disposed of into the wheelbarrow. The soil remains the mottled olive brown with black, gray, and white inclusions.

The second pick pass was made in the eastern third of the trench. Soil is consistent with that of above and the rest of Locus 8 . Artifacts so far include small pieces of terra cotta and small sherds of pottery, no bone so far. A pick pass in the central meters and a pick pass in the western third of the trench trace our movement through Locus 8 from east to west. Because the same soil type and artifact content

remains, the same methodology described above will continue to be employed.

While sorting the soil picked from the eastern meters of the trench, a fragment of slipped pottery (Special #1) and a possible Gorgon fragment (Special find #2) were recovered.

Another pick pass was conducted in the central meters. Soil remains consistent so the methods of sorting and dumping do, as well. A pick pass has been made in the westernmost third of the trench.

PM

A pick pass was conducted in the eastern extent of the trench. Soil color and content remain consistent. While sorting pottery, two sherds of slipped pottery (Special finds 3and 4) were recovered.

Special find #3:

- Slipped pottery

- 23-26 23.38 mAE

A pick pass was conducted in the central extent of the trench. While soil color remains consistent, a high concentration of well-crafted pottery is being recovered, including slipped pottery (Special find #5), an unknown, potentially decorated pottery handle (Special find #6), and a slipped pottery rim (Special find #7).
