Locus 8

AM

A light pick pass starts the day, in the Eastern half of the trench, in order that as the potential relationships between the stones revealed in the afternoon yesterday might be clarified. The soil here retains the bluish-gray mottled inclusions within a dark brown soil, with more terracotta than pottery being found. Soil from this pass is hand-sorted over buckets. A fragment of lateral Sima (Special find #1) was uncovered during sorting.

Special find #1 :

- Locus 8

- 72.70S/56.47E

- 23.03 mAE

- Lateral Sima

-

A fragment of vitrified terracotta (Special find #2) was found while sorting.

Special find #2 :

- Locus 8

- 72.90S/56.90E

- 23.01 mAE

- vitrified terracotta

The trench floor in the Eastern half of Locus 8 is leveled using hand picks and trowels. Because no trench-wide baulk walling has been done in several days and thus the walls have become very steep, baulk walling is now being done using picks and trowels.

Because the soil has now consistently changed in color to a dark medium mottled brown with bluish-gray inclusions, as well as more terracotta and less pottery than before, a new locus will be declared underlying Locus 8 . Therefore, after photographs and opening elevations were taken, Locus 8 was closed and Locus 9 opened in the area in which Locus 8 had occupied.

Locus 9 , Opening Elevations

Locus 9 represents the soil and material change described above.

A first pick pass through the Easternmost meter of the trench was made to begin work in Locus 9 . Soil is hand-sorted over buckets and dumped into a wheelbarrow.

PM

A pick pass was conducted in the central extent of the trench. Soil color and content remain consistent.

A second pass was conducted in the Western extent of the trench. In both the Southwest corner, as well as Northern-central extent of the trench, large fragments of terracotta and pottery were recovered. Stones within Locus 9 also seem consistently sizable in nature.

A third pass was conducted in the Central-Eastern extent of the trench. The soil has a noticeable lack

of pottery and terracotta, except in pockets of concentrated spots.

Levelling was conducted in the Southern half of the trench, and closing elevations were taken.
