Daily opening photos were taken, as well as opening elevations. Work begins in the interior of the circular feature, focusing on removing soil in an effort to better expose the tile and stone that is present. Opening elevations are as follows:

NW Corner: 24.21m A.E.

NE Corner: 24.16m A.E.

SE Corner: 24.22m A.E.

SW Corner: 24.19m A.E.

The clay-like soil has been sunbaked on the surface, but remains moist underneath tile, a couple of centimeters down. A rather sizeable fragment of lateral sima has been uncovered.

A few of the stones found in the interior are showing signs of deterioration. One such stone was removed from the northeast of the interior. It is possible that these stones were deposited inside the circular feature at the same time as the tile and decorated architectural terra cotta, perhaps to increase the volume. These stones may possibly also be originally from coursing closer to the aperture of the feature and removed in an effort to widen the opening. Three small, 15cm stones have been removed from the exterior of the western face of the feature. Work has moved to the western face to remove as much soil from between the remaining stones as possible so that they can also be removed. Hand picks and trowels are being used to expedite the process. An additional ~10cm stone was removed from the western face. Significantly more pottery sherds are being found around the exterior of the feature, as opposed to the interior.

A large ~50cm stone was removed from the western face. An additional ~45cm stone was also removed, along with three 8-10cm stones, all from the exterior of the western face. Having leveled soil of the exterior of the fourth 50cm cut down the western face, work moved back to the interior of the feature. Some stones are still remaining in the fourth 5ocm cut, to be dealt with later. Fragments of sima cavetto removed from the interior.

Twofold effort to remove stones from the exterior profile and interior fill continued. Currently the western profile stones of the circular feature are in place in the northwestern edge and difficult to remove as they are wedged in by the northeastern diameter edge (which is being left in situ) and the stones concentrated in the interior. Therefore, work alternates back and forth between a focus on the removal of both western profile exterior and interior fill stones. One 35cm in length rock removed from the interior. A fragment of frieze plaque recovered from beneath the rock and two more stones, one 20cm in length, the other 10cm in length, removed as well.

Another stone, 40cm in length, loosened and removed from the interior. The stone directly next to it, 40cm in length, also removed. Soil beneath the stones continues to be consistent with Locus 19 , medium brown, claylike, and moist. Tile continues to be included within the soil pack in high concentration while pottery is found in a smaller concentration within the interior. Work also continues removing soil around and below the stones of the western exterior within this fourth 50cm cut. A possible statue fragment recovered from the interior from beneath the stones removed.

Large stone (~70cm in length) removed from northwest corner of the profile of the circular feature. Another stone (~50cm in length) removed from just below the first stone. A third stone (~40cm in length) removed just south of the previous stone. A flake of chert, probably worked, recovered from between the first and second stones.

Locus 19

Work ended for the day. About 20cm left to drop until the end of the fourth 50cm cut.

Daily Totals:

Locus 19:
