Description | Locus 6 is a medium to light yellowish-brown, somewhat densely packed, somewhat claylike soil. It is heavily included with small stones five to ten centimeters in length and roots. Both the initial and closing surfaces of Locus 6 sloped gently downward from north to south. Four stumps ten to sixty centimeters in length are present at surface level. At the final depth reached in Locus 6 this season, a continuation of the stone packing feature visible in Locus 3 was uncovered. The packing was located in the southwestern sector of the extension, beginning about sixty centimeters north of the southwestern corner along the western baulk wall to 1.6m north of the southwestern corner along the western baulk wall (i.e., having a height north to south of 1m). The packing extended the full width of the extension in the southwestern sector (i.e., having a width east to west of 1m) to meet the stones in Locus 3. It was comprised of around twenty-five to thirty stones which were fifteen to fifty centimeters in length and were relatively tightly packed. Worn fragments of terra cotta, plaster, pottery, bone, a fossilized shell, slag, vitrified terra cotta, worked chert, and bronze fragments were found in this locus. The soil pack was between sixteen and thirty-five centimeters deep, but due to time constraints Locus 6 was not excavated to completion. Locus 6 is the equivalent to Locus 3 in the original portion of T-87. |
