Resumed incomplete pick pass from yesterday in the two by two meters in the northeast. Soil, hand sorted into buckets, remains consistent with Locus 5 --a medium to darkish brown, claylike, somewhat compacted soil. The soil pack is heavily included with small stones (2-10cm) and roots of a small diameter. Materials recovered include worn terra cotta and pottery. Though smaller fragments of slag are being collected in bulk, a larger fragment found and recovered as a special find.

Locus 5

A lighter brown-yellowish soil has been detected in the northeastern two by two meters of the extension. Pick pass

therefore initiated in the southwest to northwest one by four meter area to see if it can be detected there. Soil hand sorted into buckets consistent with Locus 5 , but the new soil found below it. Materials recovered while cleaning include terra cotta, pottery, bone, and slag. Many roots and small stones (2-10cm) also encountered. As the soil change has been detected across the entire extension, preparations for the declaration of a new locus underway. Baulk walls trimmed and all materials recovered collected as baulk trim finds. Roots also clipped and extension scraped down. Main trench additionally swept down.
