Pick axe used to continue dropping the elevation of the area north of the stone packing feature to that of the stones. Soil remains consistent with Locus 6 , hand sorted into buckets. Small roots and small stones (2-7cm) included in the soil pack. Small concentrations of terra cotta, pottery, and a fragment of bronze recovered.
Find 1: Bronze Pin Shaft Fragment
71.69E/46.00S
25.52m A.E.
Second pick pass done across the northern meter of the extension to lower it to the elevation of the stone packing feature. Soil remains consistent with Locus 6 , hand sorted into buckets. A bronze pin fragment recovered.
Find 2: Bronze Fibula Pin Fragment
72.46E/46.99S
25.48m A.E.
Other materials recovered include terra cotta, pottery, and slag in small concentrations. One fragment of larger slag found.
Find 3: Large Slag Fragment
72.34E/45.66S
25.56m A.E.
Small stones (2-7cm) and roots continue to be included in the soil pack at medium concentrations. A third pick pass completed across the area north of the stone packing. The soil turned up remains consistent with Locus 6 , hand sorted into buckets. A bronze fibula fragment recovered.
Find 4: Bronze Fibula Coil and Pin Fragment
70.86E/45.97S
25.45m A.E.
Other materials recovered include small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery. Soil pack includes small stones (2-5cm) and small roots. Some bone fragments also recovered as well as a bronze clasp fragment.
Find 5: Bronze Looped Clasp Fragment
71.55E/45.86S
25.50m A.E.
Another small fragment of bronze recovered, collected in bulk. As the third pick pass was cleaned, it became clear that the area north of the stone packing feature had been leveled down to that of the
stones. Therefore, picking will be continued beside the feature in order to see it in profile. Fourth pick pass initiated in the meter by three meter strip just north of the stone feature. As picking done along the western baulk wall, several stones encountered. When they were cleaned after the pass they appear to extend perpendicularly from the somewhat linear stone packing feature. The stones which comprise the perpendicular feature are much smaller (5-15cm), but are at the same elevation as the more robust stone packing feature. Soil cleaned in this pass remains consistent with Locus 6 , hand sorted into buckets. Small roots and small stones (2-5cm) included in the soil pack. Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery found, as well as a larger fragment of slag.
Find 6: Large Slag Fragment
72.31E/46.63S
25.48m A.E.
Fifth pick pass completed across the northern meter by three meters. Soil turned over remains consistent with Locus 6 , hand sorted into buckets. Small stones (2-5cm) and roots included in the soil in medium concentration. The perpendicular stone feature has not yet been seen to continue north into the northernmost meter; that areas is also about 4-5cm higher than the uncovered stones so they may be yet to emerge. Small concentrations of terra cotta, pottery, and slag recovered, as well as a fragment of bronze.
Find 7: Bronze Sheet Fragment
71.71E/45.56S
25.55m A.E.
One light pick pass done again over the area in which the perpendicular feature might possibly extend if it does continue. Soil remains consistent with Locus 6 , hand sorted into buckets. Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery recovered.
PM
It was determined that the small perpendicular stone packing which extended north from the robust stone packing was not associated due to the smallness of stones (5-15cm) and the looseness of their pack. To that end, a sixth pick pass initiated just north of the stones moving north towards the northern baulk wall. Soil hand sorted into buckets, remains consistent
with Locus 6 . Small roots and small stones (2-5cm) included within the soil pack. Materials recovered in small concentrations including terra cotta, pottery, and vitrified terra cotta. A second small fragment of bronze found, collected in bulk. When the pick pass was completed, the soil north of the stones had been dropped 5-7cm below the elevation of the stone packing feature. Hand picks and trowels are now being used to drop the elevation around the packing at its western meter both north and south of the feature in order to see it in profile. After the soil around the northern and southern edges of the westernmost meter of the feature were dropped about 10cm in total the profile of the stone feature could be better observed. On each side there are 5-7cm of soil between the large stones (20-35cm) and smaller stones (2-7cm) below them. On the northern side of the feature in places there
is a third level of small stones (2-7cm) again divided from the previous small stones\' level by several centimeters of soil.
Daily Totals:
Terra cotta: 4/5 bowl
Pottery: 1/2 latte (81 fragments)
Slag: 8 fragments
Vitrified terra cotta: 2 fragments
Bronze: 2 fragments
