  • An area is a two dimensional projection of an arbitrary geomorphologic portion of the site. No systematic or scientific methods were used in designating areas. Instead, area designations (Areas A through I) were assigned based loosely on the topography of the site. Area A is located on the top of the main mound, Area B and Area C are located on the western slopes of the site, Area D, Area E and Area I are located on the eastern, southeastern and southern slopes of the main mound respectively while Areas F, G and H are located in the flat lower potion of the site to the east of the main mound (often referred to as the "lower town"). On average these areas are about 1/4 of a hectare in size (1 hectare = 100 meters-sq.). Each area contains one or more trenches that were under the supervision of an area supervisor.
  • Area F is a large excavation area encompassing the northeastern portion of Kenan Tepe's lower town. It is made up of a flat terrace approximately 23 meters above the current level of the Tigris River. Area F measures approximately 50 by 50 meters. It is bordered on the east by a steep drop to the Tigris River. On the north and south Area F is bordered by seasonal drainages and on the west it abuts Area G. Excavations reveal that Area F contains cultural deposits between 2 meters and 4.5 meters in depth dating to several phases of the Late Chalcolithic period and the first part of the Early Bronze Age. This cultural debris rests atop hydraulically deposited sterile clay with calcium carbonate inclusions and layers of stone conglomerate. A total of seven stratigraphic levels have been identified in Area F (Creekmore 2007, Foster 2009). Over the course of more than ten years of research at Kenan Tepe, UTARP team members opened 22 separate excavation units in Area F including several soundings and a number of trenches of various sizes.
