Description | Locus 4 is located in the northern meters of the trench and extends east-west across the entire trench, over the original part of the trench and the eastern and western extensions. Locus 4 is located to the north of the northern linear rock feature previously uncovered in Loci 1, 2, and 3 and is delineated from Locus 5 by this feature to the south. Locus 4 consists of a slightly yellowish-brown, medium-dark soil that is claylike in texture. Locus 4 contains some small rocks but these are not densely packed and appear to be scatter; due to the relative lack of rocks in Locus 4, the northern linear rock feature, that runs east-west across most of the trench and is contained in Locus 5, is clearly delineated on its northern side. Noticeably more archaeological materials were recovered in Locus 4 than in Loci 1, 2, and 3 and the vast majority of these materials are ceramics, although some bone fragments have been found as well. It should be mentioned that much of the bone recovered from this locus was burnt. Notably, very little architectural roofing tile was recovered from this locus. Furthermore, all materials found in Locus 4 are ancient in date, indicating that this is a contextually secure deposit, although it is not possible to date this stratum to a specific occupational phase of the site. |
