Description | Locus 1 consisted of topsoil, which in T 59 was a dark brown, grass-root-filled, loamy soil lying atop a medium brown colored, claylike soil. Both the initial and closing surfaces of Locus 1 sloped gently downward from north to south. Locus 1 contained many small rocks and larger tree roots, but little archaeological material, with very small amounts of terracotta roofing tile, pottery, or bone found. One sherd of medieval pottery was found along with the ancient materials recovered, indicating that Locus 1 is not a contextually secure stratum. Underlying the soil of Locus 1 were various rock features. In the northern third of the locus, found at the bottom of the stratum, was a linear feature of small-to-medium sized rocks. In the center of this feature, there were four larger rocks and on either side were dense packings of smaller rocks. To the north of this linear rock feature, which ran approximately east-west across the trench, very few rocks were found, but to the south of the linear rock feature were scatters of small rocks, which were noticeably less densely packed than the rocks of the linear rock feature itself. In the southern half of the locus was a concentration of large rocks and in the western meters of the locus bedrock became visible. Locus 1 was opened in the original portion, i.e. the central two meters, of the trench and is equivalent to Locus 2 in the western extension and Locus 3 in the eastern extension. |
