In preparation for the declaration of a new locus, baulk walling initiated using hand picks and trowels. Two fragments of terra cotta recovered. Small stones (2-7cm) removed from the northeast corner (where there seems also to be a concentration of these stones in the next locus). Roots clipped along the baulk walls and throughout the trench. Opening photographs and elevations of Locus 2 taken:

NW Corner: 25.93m A.E.

NE Corner: 25.95m A.E.

SE Corner: 25.87m A.E.

SW Corner: 25.77m A.E.

Locus 2 is a medium brown, claylike, and somewhat densely packed soil. The pack is heavily included with roots from stumps and trees which are visible on the surface. In the northeast corner there is a concentration of small stones (2-7cm) of unclear nature. To that end, hand picks are being used to excavate Locus 2 , beginning along the eastern baulk wall and moving westward, and removing 2-5cm. Furthermore, a margin of soil with artificial baulk walls is being left around each of the groups of trees present along the northern baulk wall. When the full extent of the trench had been turned over with hand picks to a depth of 2-5cm it became clear that no features were present. The large pick axe therefore used to break up the soil (5-10cm deep) beginning along the east baulk wall and moving west in one meter strips. Terra cotta and pottery recovered in small concentrations. One fragment of Medieval pottery recovered near the central

area of the trench.

Locus 2

With the pick pass fully completed, new pass 5-10cm deep initiated again along the eastern baulk wall moving westward in one meter sections. Soil hand sorted into buckets. Soil turned up remains consistent with Locus 2 , the medium brown, claylike soil and continues to be heavily included with roots. Small rocks (2-7cm) also found throughout the

trench in medium concentration but in no collected feature. In the northeast corner below the Locus 2 soil which has been turned up a new yellowish-brown soil type being encountered; its extent will be traced back as the pick pass progresses across the trench. While cleaning the remaining soil turned up in the first pick pass of Locus 2 along the western baulk wall, a fragment of on iron nail found.

Locus 2

In the soil turned up by the second pick pass, very small concentrations of pottery and terra cotta recovered. The yellowish-brown soil has been uncovered in much of the eastern meter but yet to be found elsewhere; it may simply be deeper or not present which will be further

investigated in due time. While sorting soil in the central section of the trench another fragment of slag recovered.

Locus 2

PM

Second pick pass across the trench completed. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 in the west where turned up and also in trench. Soil sorted into buckets. Roots and small stones (2-7cm) remain included in the soil pack. Small concentrations of terra cotta recovered. Third pick pass initiated in the second meter from the east where the yellowish-brown soil has not yet been revealed and moving westward. As the final soil cleaned from the second pick pass along the western baulk wall, some yellowish-brown soil

detected there. Soil from the third pick pass sorted by hand into buckets. Soil removed consistent with Locus 2 , but just beneath it the new yellowish-brown soil being revealed across the entire trench. Many roots and small stones (2-10cm) continue to be included. Terra cotta and pottery recovered in small concentrations including a fragment of Medieval pottery.

Locus 2

Some leveling done using hand picks under large roots and a small stump which were removed from the central two meters of the trench (E-W). Soil sorted into buckets by hand. A few fragments of terra cotta and a fragment of Medieval pottery recovered.

Locus 2

The margins of soil being left around the two clusters of trees along the northern baulk wall trimmed; materials collected with those of Locus 2 . Initiated baulk wall trimming along the northern baulk wall (materials collected as baulk trim). Roots clipped before work ended for the day.
