T-87 laid out by triangulation off of the southern baulk wall of T-82, with the dimensions of 4m E-W (71-75E) and 2m N-S (47-49S). Area cleaned of brush, vines, and dead leaves. T-87 declared open and opening photographs taken. Opening elevations also taken for Locus 1 :

NW Corner: 25.93m A.E.

NE Corner: 25.95m A.E.

SE Corner: 25.94m A.E.

SW Corner: 25.81m A.E.

Excavation begun in Locus 1 , breaking up the soil with a pick axe and sorting soil into buckets. First pick pass initiated along the western baulk wall moving eastward 2m. Locus 1 is a dark brown humus layer heavily included with organic debris and roots. It is hard packed, dense, and somewhat moist. The soil pack includes also rocks of a small size (10-20cm in length). No artifacts recovered.

Pick pass initiated in the eastern two meters of T-87. Soil remains consistent with Locus 1 --dark brown, humus layer heavily included with organic debris, roots, and stones of a small size (5-15cm). One fragment of terra cotta recovered. Another pick pass begun in the western two meters, especially focusing on the many stumps to pull soil away from them. The soil turned up is consistent with Locus 1 , but a new soil type is being revealed below. The new soil is claylike and a medium brown. Several fragments of terra cotta found.

Pick pass completed in the eastern two meters. Soil turned over consistent with Locus 1 , but the new soil type also being uncovered in the east. Soil hand sorted into buckets and fragments of terra cotta recovered, including one fragment of Medieval tile. A few fragments of pottery also found. Because the new soil has been found in patches across the entire trench, trowels and hand picks being used to scrape down the patches of Locus 1 which remain. Work begun at the western baulk wall, scraping back toward the east. Clippers used to clip roots simultaneously.

Daily Totals:

Locus 1 :

Terra cotta: 1/10 bowl (26 fragments)

Pottery: 1/20 latte (3 fragments)
