Baulk walling continued using hand picks and trowels to remove soil. Roots clipped and a portion of a stump along the eastern baulk wall removed. A few fragments of worn terra cotta and one fragment of pottery found. Opening photographs and elevations of Locus 3 taken:
NW Corner: 25.77m A.E.
NE Corner: 25.88m A.E.
SE Corner: 25.79m A.E.
SW Corner: 25.65m A.E.
Excavation begun in Locus 3 using a pick axe to break up soil beginning at the western baulk wall and moving eastward in one meter strips. Soil hand sorted into buckets and removed from the trench. Locus 3 is a yellowish-brown, claylike, somewhat densely compacted soil. Fewer roots included within the soil pack. Small stones continue to be included as well (1-15cm in length). Few artifacts recovered; terra cotta and pottery found in small concentrations. Simultaneously, hand picks used to define stumps and their root systems in order to work towards their removal. During picking in the last, easternmost meter, a fineware body sherd with impression found.
