Began with a pick axe breaking up soil along the eastern baulk wall and moving westward in one meter strips. Soil hand sorted into buckets, remains consistent with Locus 3 . As the pick pass progresses, attention also paid to removing soil from around stumps and their root systems. Soil pack remains included with stones of small length (2-7cm). Few artifacts recovered, including terra cotta fragments, a few pieces of pottery, and one fragment of bone. While cleaning in the central portion of the trench, a bronze fragment found.

The first pick pass across the trench finished
and a second initiated along the eastern baulk wall moving westward. Soil sorted by hand into buckets, remains consistent with Locus 3 . Roots and small stones continue to be included in the soil pack. Stumps cleaned using hand pick. Several large roots removed. Materials recovered include terra cotta, plaster, and pottery in small concentrations. One fragment of slag recovered from the central area of the trench.

work simultaneously to clean around and under stumps and their root systems. While cleaning in the eastern half of the trench, a fragment of slag recovered.

The third pick pass paused in the center of the trench and work focused on using the pick axe to clean around the base of stumps. Roots clipped.

Third pick pass resumed in the third meter from the east, moving westward. Soil sorted by hand into buckets, remains consistent with Locus 3 . At the same time, hand picks used to clean soil from the base of stumps. While cleaning in the western half of the trench, a fragment of bronze and a fragment of Medieval pottery found.

Third pick pass completed. Along the eastern baulk wall, pick axe and axe used to remove a medium sized stump (40-60cm) there. Area beneath the stump turned over with a pick axe to level it. Soil consistent with Locus 3 , sorted by hand into buckets. Terra cotta and pottery recovered in small concentrations as well as a small fragment of slag.

Work entirely focused on removing soil from around the bases of the four stumps
in the central section of the trench. One stump along the margin of soil left around the northeastern cluster of trees removed using the axe and pick axe. Roots clipped and work ended for the day. A fragment of loom weight discovered in the terra cotta bulk finds.
