AM

This morning it is evident that the soil change can be seen across the extension. Baulk walls trimmed and material collected with Locus 4. Small concentrations of worn terra cotta and pottery recovered. When baulk walls trimmed, the extension scraped down and roots clipped. During scraping a couple of fragments of terra cotta recovered as well as a fragment of slag, collected in bulk due to the frequency of slag found in Locus 4 . First pick pass initiated in the southern meter wide by two meter long section. Soil broken up by hand and sorted into buckets. Locus 5 is a medium to darkish brown, claylike, somewhat compacted soil. Soil heavily included with roots and with medium concentrations of small stones (2-10cm). Materials included in soil pack are terra cotta and pottery in small concentrations. A fragment of slag (which possibly joins with Find 1 from 15 July) with modern break recovered.

Locus 5

Pick pass continued in the northwest one by two meters. Soil hand sorted into buckets, remains consistent with Locus 5 soil--medium to dark brown, claylike, somewhat compacted. The soil pack continues to be included with small roots and small stones (2-10cm). Materials recovered include small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery, as well as a fragment of modern glass. Due to time constraints, the pick pass only half completed before being paused until tomorrow. With the remaining time, hand picks used to level higher patches in the picked area and roots clipped.

Daily Totals:

Locus 4:

Terra cotta: 1/10 bowl

Pottery: 2 fragments

Slag: 1 fragment

Locus 5:

Terra cotta: 1/6 bowl
